TRIATHLON 2015 · WORLD CUP SERIES 160
MOOLOOLABA –
SETTING THE SCENE
EUROPEANS CONQUER DOWN UNDER
Australia's Sunshine Coast set the scene for the
opening of the 2015 World Cup season for the
ninth consecutive year. France's David Hauss and
Spain's Tamara Gomez Garrido each claimed their
first Mooloolaba title. While Hauss has made a
handful of appearances at the ITU World Cup race,
he had yet to win it. That fate changed for Hauss
after he left T2 around 15 seconds down, but
caught up halfway through the run to win his first
World Cup title since 2012 in Ishiagki, Japan.
Behind Hauss, Australia's Jacob Birtwhistle
sprinted away from Spain's Vicente Hernandez
in the final few hundred metres to claim silver,
while Hernandez ended up with the bronze. In the
women's race, Gomez Garrido showed up with a
steady performance throughout the race, but
earned the gold in the final lap of the 5km sprint
run, breaking away from Canada's Amelie Kretz
who crossed the line a mere four seconds later for
silver. Bronze was awarded to Australia's Ashleigh
Gentle after she pulled out a strong final lap.
