TRIATHLON 2015 · WORLD CUP SERIES 174
TONGYEONG – LAST
BUT NOT LEAST
SHARP & SATO SAIL TO TOP SPOTS
In the last race of the World Cup season, Great
Britain's Matt Sharp and Japan's Yuko Sato
both secured their first ITU World Cup titles in
Tongyeong. The men's race saw Sharp survive the
masses in a race where almost the entire field
exited the swim as one long train, forming a lead
group on the bike of 60 men. It all came down to
the run, where Sharp took off for gold and David
Castro Fajardo (ESP) and Courtney Atkinson (AUS)
followed to earn silver and bronze respectively.
Yuka Sato built on her late-season good form to
score victory in Tongyeong. The Korean city has
been a great location for the young Japanese
athlete after she claimed bronze in 2012. Sato
was in the hunt during the swim and bike but made
her move on the third lap of the run to secure the
win. The remaining podium places came down to
a race of between Jolanda Annen (SUI) and Sato's
compatriot Yuko Takahashi. The pair ran shoulder
to shoulder before Annen found another gear to
claim an emotional silver from Takahasi.
