APPENDICES // 69 Access The race course will be closed to vehicular traffic. Paramedics and members of the medical team will provide on-site course coverage based out of the main medical tent with mobile members patrolling the course in pairs on up to 7 golf carts for all races and 2 motorcycles and 1 van for the races with extended bike courses. The van will serve to transport athletes with minor injuries (not requiring EMS dispatch) back to the medical tent or to their bike as needed, and will be staffed by two medical personnel from the medical tent. All other segments of the course are accessible by golf cart. Depending on the situation, some of these motorized vehicles will be used by medical personnel to carry out non-critical athlete transfers. Medical Team Communication The Medical Team Talk Group will have a dedicated radio channel. They will be supplied with 10 portable radios to be distributed as follows: On Course: 7 EMS: 1 Medical Captain: 1 Command Center Representative: 1 Communication with other race personnel will be through the Command Center. Cell phone lists will be available each day to be used as back up communication. Grid maps will be provided each day for each race course to easily communicate the location of an emergency situation. St. John Ambulance will communicate with the Command Center. Facility The main medical facility will be a tented area near the finish line with restricted access. The tent will have electricity, running drinking water and sink, fridge/freezer and fans and will have the capacity to hold up to 50 patients. The tent will be fully equipped with medical supplies. Incident Plan The course will be covered by teams consisting of a mixture of physicians, nurses, physiotherapists and EMS providers who will be in communication with the on-site ambulances. Injured or downed athletes will be assessed and triaged from the field of play to either the medical tent for minor treatment/observation or for more serious injuries, will be transported by EMS to one of two tertiary hospitals (detailed below).
