2020 EVENTS A heavily curtailed 2020 race calendar saw the season put on pause after the Mooloolaba World Cup had got things underway in Australia back in March. With much of the world in lockdown, World Triathlon then worked with its partners and Local Organising Committees to create a set of guidelines that would enable racing to return as quickly and safely as possible ( see page 103). When it became clear that the Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon Series would be the only WTS event able to go ahead in 2020, the Executive Board, with the consultation of World Triathlon members, voted to make it a standalone World Championship race, taking place alongside the annual Mixed Relay World Championships. The racing in Hamburg took place thanks to the close cooperation of the city authorities and LOC on a purpose-built course outside of the city and entirely closed off to spectators. From there, World Cup races were able to take place in three European locations; Karlovy Vary, Arzachena and Valencia, with stacked fields and incredible performances despite the long lay-off. "World Triathlon wants to thank all of its LOCs and partners for their professionalism and the spirit of close collaboration they have shown through a turbulent year for sport all around the world," said World Triathlon President Marisol Casado. "From the first indications of the scale of this pandemic's impact, our priority was to provide as much clarity and certainty as possible for all our athletes and our stakeholders. We have all endured a lot of frustration and disappointment, but those events that we have been able to hold since August are a huge source of pride for World Triathlon and highlight the hard work of our partners, leaving us able to look forward to a hugely exciting 2021."
