WORKING TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE World Triathlon took major steps through 2020 to set new benchmarks for a more sustainable future for the sport. Established at the start of the year, the World Triathlon Sustainability Commission formed to create a detailed pathway for greater environmental consideration across policies and among stakeholders, Local Organising Committees and within the organisation itself. The first meeting of the World Triathlon Sustainability Commission took place in March. The commission members are Loreen Barnett (CAN, Chair), Dr Sarah Springman (GBR), Abdellatif Labaied (TUN), Justin Park (KOR), Liber Garcia (URU), Mads Freund (DEN) and Phillip Dally (NZL). Published earlier in the year, the Sustainability Guidelines for Event Organisers are at the heart of World Triathlon's efforts to proactively tackle the climate emergency and ensure its events are doing all they can to minimise their impact on the planet. The comprehensive guidelines set out a range of best practices for everything from public transport provision to waste management, all based around the 'three-tree' certification system that will be a requirement of all events in the future. "When our environmental impact is taken seriously and considerately, it doesn't necessarily need to be more expensive or more time- consuming. It does however need to become a habit. Minimising our negative impact on the planet is all of our responsibility and these guidelines represent an important step in the ways in which we deliver events so we can work with all our stakeholders towards clear sustainability goals," said World Triathlon President Marisol Casado. 115 contents
