MEN'S REVIEW – AUGUST 26, 2004 ATHENS 2004 Despite the best efforts of the top swimmers, the bulk of the field remained in touch with the lead through the first stage of the race. A large group of athletes took off on the 40km bike stage within seconds of each other. Midway through the difficult five- lap bike course, a decisive breakaway group including New Zealand's Bevan Docherty and Hamish Carter, Switzerland's Sven Riederer and Oliver Marceau; and Frenchman Frederic Belaubre all pulled away from the main pack. This powerful group worked well together and built a significant lead. By the second transition the six leaders had a 30-second advantage of the rest of the field, and took that into the 10km run. Midway through the group was slowly whittled down to Carter, Docherty and Riederer and in the closing stages, Riederer dropped off the pace. Carter then kicked into another gear, leaving a spent Docherty trailing in his wake. An elated Carter went on to break the tape for gold, anchoring a gold-silver New Zealand performance with Docherty coming in second.
