WELCOME TO TOKYO Welcome to Tokyo! It is indeed a pleasure to be able to say that at last. The Olympic Games are finally upon us, the magnificent city of Tokyo will be the stage for sporting performances that will captivate the planet and, for three highly anticipated days, triathlon will be at the heart of the action. This is the sixth time that triathlon has been in the Olympic programme, and ever since its debut at Sydney 2000, our sport has shown the world incredible entertainment through powerful images of endurance and emotion. Who will be crowned champions in Tokyo? It is impossible to predict, such is the quality across both the men's and women's start lists. The Olympic debut of the mixed team relay adds another opportunity to compete for medals and high drama, and the always unpredictable, high-octane format is sure to capture the imaginations of newcomers to the sport. And that is what the Olympic Games is all about. Inspiring and motivating new generations to discover sport and show what can be achieved through dedication and perseverance. World Triathlon is enormously proud of its athletes and all that they have done in order to qualify for Tokyo 2020. Now, we are ready to once again show the world the beauty and thrill of our sport. I hope that this guide enhances your enjoyment by revealing some of the stories behind the performances you will witness, and that together we can give our athletes the spotlight they deserve as they compete for the biggest prize of them all – Olympic gold. Yours in sport, Marisol Casado World Triathlon President 3 - World Triathlon Media Guide Tokyo 2020
