HOW DO ATHLETES QUALIFY FOR THE OLYMPICS? In the years leading up to the Olympic Games, World Triathlon sets stringent qualification criteria for National Federations and National Olympic Committees. The NOCs determine their athlete qualification parameters, often involving strong performances at specific races, such as a test event or a World Triathlon Championship Series event, or they organise their own events for qualification. For this Olympic period, you can read the Olympic Qualification Ranking criteria here. HOW DO ATHLETES PICK THEIR START POSITIONS? Selecting the start position is a blind selection process, which takes place at the athlete briefing. The first 10 athletes ranked in the Olympic Qualification List go first. CAN A TEAM CHANGE THE ORDER OF THE ATHLETES? A Team can change the order of the athletes -but always keeping the structure female - male - female - male- until two hours before the start of the race. IF AN ATHLETE DOES NOT START ON THE INDIVIDUAL RACE, CAN HE/SHE RACE THE MIXED RELAY? Yes, they can. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON RULE INFRINGEMENTS? An athlete can be penalised for rule transgressions either with a time penalty or disqualification. Disqualification is used for severe rule infringements such as unsportsmanlike behaviour, deliberate contact with another athlete and abusive language to an official. HOW DOES WORLD TRIATHLON IMPLEMENT ANTI-DOPING STRATEGIES? World Triathlon has accepted and is a signatory of the World Anti- Doping Agency's (WADA) Code to help keep the sport of triathlon clean; the World Triathlon Anti-Doping Rules are in compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code. More info: www.triathlon.org/about/anti-doping HOW ARE RACE NUMBERS ASSIGNED? Race numbers are assigned at random to the National Federation. WHEN ARE THE START LISTS FOR THE MIXED RELAY PUBLISHED? The start lists won't be published and final until 2 hours before the start of the Mixed Relay event. Teams will be formed with athletes in the individual start lists, no other athlete can compete. WHEN DOES AN ATHLETE HAVE TO SERVE TIME IN THE PENALTY BOX? A time penalty is served in a penalty box situated on the run course or in T1 if it's a false start. Penalties can be served on any lap of the run but must be served before the end of the race. The most common reasons for a 15-second time penalty are 1. false start 2. failure to rack bike correctly, 3. mounting the bike before the mount line or dismounting after the dismount line, 4. storing equipment (e.g bike helmet or wetsuit) outside the designated area in transition. WHICH TEAMS CAN RACE IN THE MIXED RELAY? Every country that has 2 men and 2 women qualified for the Olympic Games can do the Mixed Relay. Of the 18 teams lining up in Tokyo, 7 qualified through the Mixed Relay rankings, three of them by podium the Mixed Relay Test Event in Lisbon; Japan as host country and another 7 NFs qualified at least 2 men and 2 women in the individual rankings. WHY ARE THERE SO FEW ATHLETES COMPARED TO OTHER EVENTS? There are 110 spots in the Triathlon events in Tokyo 2020, 55 men and 55 women. Quotas are fixed by the International Olympic Committee and each organiser of the Olympic Games. IS THERE A MAXIMUM OF ATHLETES PER COUNTRY? Yes, the maximum number of athletes per country is three of each gender. In order to have three athletes from a country on the start list, there must be three athletes from that country ranked in the top 30 at the Olympics Ranking List.
