WOMEN'S REVIEW – AUGUST 4, 2012 LONDON 2012 Although a group got away out of the swim in the Serpentine Lake, coming out of the water Nicola Spirig saw she had most of the main contenders around her and knew she was in with a chance. Quickly riding to the front of her group she helped them bridge-up and did plenty of work to ensure no breakaways stuck. It was almost at the end of the 43km bike course though that the first problem arose – a cramp. Spirig's original plan had been to stick with the group until 200 metres to go, where she would unleash her powerful sprint. But her legs weren't dealing well with the changes of speed in the run so she ran ahead with 500metres to go. As Spirig inched closer to the finish, so did Sweden's Lisa Norden to her. With an eye on the screen in front of her, Spirig could see Norden closing. The two women burst into the tape at the exact same time. The result would be decided by photo finish, but both women already had an inkling – it was Spirig that had the edge over Norden. In all the fuss of the finish line, it was Australia's Erin Densham who finished strongly to collect bronze. It marked a extraordinary comeback for the Australian, who underwent surgery.
