PARA TRIATHLON - IMPAIRMENT CLASS EXPLAINER There are nine classes in total for the athletes across the whole of para triathlon that usually compete in 6 male and 6 female medal events: two wheelchair (PTWC), four ambulatory (PTS2 - PTS5) and three visually impaired (PTVI) . With para triathlon having four medal events for each gender on the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic schedule, the men and women PTWC and PTVI athletes to have successfully qualified will compete and of the ambulant classes, the PTS2 and PTS5 women and PTS4 and PTS5 men are competing. Here are the definitions that define each class: PTWC1 – The most impaired wheelchair users. Athletes must use a recumbent handcycle on the bike course and a racing wheelchair on the run segment. Includes athletes with comparable activity limitation and an impairment of, but not limited to: limbs, muscle power, hypertonia, ataxia or athetosis. PTWC2 – Least impaired wheelchair users. Athletes must use a recumbent handcycle on the bike course and a racing wheelchair on the run segment. Includes athletes with comparable activity limitation and an impairment of, but not limited to: limbs, muscle power, hypertonia, ataxia or athetosis. PTS2 – Severe impairments. In both bike and run segments, amputee athletes may use approved prosthesis or other supportive devices. Includes athletes with comparable activity limitation and an impairment of, but not limited to, limbs, hypertonia, ataxia and or athetosis, impaired muscle power or range of movement. PTS3 – Significant impairments. In both bike and run segments, amputee athletes may use approved prosthesis or other supportive devices.
