KELLY ELMLINGER Kelly Elmlinger was a nursing graduate of North Carolina University when she moved to Texas and became an avid runner. In 2013, she took a break from sport after experiencing pain in her lower left leg but, after a round of tests, was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare form of soft tissue cancer. After several surgeries to try to save her leg, she made the decision to have it amputated. Having returned to sport at the first opportunity, in 2018 Kelly was named the USA Para Triathlon Developmental Athlete of the Year after winning the 2018 USA Para Triathlon National Championships in just her second race since becoming an amputee. This year saw her open the season with back-to-back gold medals at the World Triathlon Para Series events in Yokohama and Leeds and now Kelly is ready to become a Paralympian for the first time at Tokyo 2020.
