It was a golden day for Mexico at the 2023 Santiago Pan American Games in Vina del Mar as Lizeth Rueda delivered a running masterclass to claim gold, 12 years after her Games debut as a marathon swimmer. Teammate Rosa Maria Tapia rounded off a great day for Mexico with the bronze medal after Colombia's Maria Carolina Velasquez Soto had secured silver. It was a cold morning at the El Sol beach when the 34 women lined up on the sand for the one-lap, 1500m swim. Vittoria Lopes (BRA) and Rueda pulled clear of the field and had a half-minute lead by the time they hit the beach, only for the Brazilian to nail transition and set off solo, Rueda's wetsuit struggles leaving her with the chasers including Emy Legault (CAN), Djenyfer Arnold (BRA), Moira Miranda (ARG) and Luisa Baptista (BRA). Domnika Jamnicky and Velasquez then powered up and helped close down the gap to Lopes, who was feeling the pace on the run and quickly getting reeled in. Rueda, Velasquez and Tapia were past her by the end of lap one and it was at the end of the third lap that Rueda made her decisive move, leaving Velasquez to take the tape from Tapia, Erica Hawley with fourth place for Bermuda. 2 Nov 2023 Pan American Games - Elite Women 202 contents
