British newcomer Hugo Milner lit up the Miyazaki World Cup as he powered home to a first ever gold in only his second year of racing. Hungary's Mark Devay and New Zealand's Dylan McCullough had led the 2-lap, 1.5km swim, with Japan's Kenji Nener in third, before a group of 11 athletes formed early on the 40km bike course, carving out a useful 17-second lead over those behind. Takumi Hojo's unfortunate fall reduced the group to 10 before the likes of Sam Dickinson and Jack Willis joined and put in well over a minute into the likes of Milner and Lasse Nygaard Priester. Out of T2 and onto the run, McCullough surged to the front and looked to be on course for a debut win of his own before the marauding Milner closed in, gaining with every lap. As he drew alongside there was no pausing as he made the late, late pass and, as the unfortunate Ricardo Batista stopped to serve a penalty, the winning moment was all Milner's, McCullough with the silver and Priester the bronze. 28 Oct 2023 Elite Men 100 contents
