Le Corre soars to Sunderland gold The French men also dominated in Sunderland, Pierre Le Corre's first WTCS win coming at the end of an almighty sprint finish with teammate Leo Bergere. It was a chilly, deep-water start to the 750m swim, and only 20 seconds separated first and last out into transition. Max Stapley and Jonas Schomburg were pushing the bike pace in the lead group, Wilde and Le Corre among those giving chase. The packs merged and a late Bergere breakaway was hampered by a slow transition, leaving Wilde able to pass early. Le Corre and Bergere combined to reel in the Kiwi, though, before the 2022 world champion looked to take control, only for his teammate to make a desperate late surge and suddenly gold was Le Corre's, Wilde holding on for bronze ahead of Vasco Vilaca and Richard Murray. "I trained with Leo all summer, we have a special 'Hayden Wilde' training session… so we knew when we should attack him. I have been waiting five years for this (first WTCS victory)."
