Brazil's Manoel Messias secured gold at the Vina del Mar World Cup in Chile, the last stop on the 2023 circuit. In challenging conditions, including a 14-degree water temperature and 13-degree air temperature, Alessio Crociani of Italy led the field during the 750m choppy Pacific Ocean swim. Local hero Diego Moya and the great swimmer Henri Schoeman were tucked in behind, Brazilian duo Messias and Hidalgo mid-pack. Spain's Alberto Gonzalez led the athletes as they mounted their bikes, with Dickinson and Daniel Dixon on his tail, before Panagiotis Bitados tried to make a break. It came to nothing as a large group formed, and out of the second transition it was again Gonzalez leading the charge. Within the first kilometre, Messias had hit the front, however, Hidalgo now with him as well as Penaflor of Mexico, but with 1km it was another Brazilian detonation that did the damage, a huge kick to the tape leaving Hidalgo to pick up silver and Penaflor the bronze. 12 Nov 2023 Elite Men 104 contents
