Miguel Hidalgo gave the fans what they craved as he dug in to win a brilliant gold at the first World Cup in his home nation's capital. It hadn't been easy for the 23-year-old, the 1500m swim not going quite to plan and then taking a tumble out of T1, but he recovered brilliantly, rejoining Alessio Crociani and a 4-deep lead group early on the first bike lap. Soon a pack of 14 up front were then able to keep the chasers at bay before racking and heading out onto the 3-lap run where Hidalgo, Antonio Serrat and Charles Paquet looked to control the pace. Another Brazilian, Manoel Messias, didn't have his usual run legs, and as Paquet's challenge also faded, Serrat looked to seize control. It looked like the Spaniard had the race in his pocket, too, until Hidalgo steeled himself over the closing stages, soaring onto the blue carpet lifted by the cheers all the way to gold, Serrat having to settle for silver, Paquet an excellent bronze. 15 Oct 2023 Elite Men 92 contents
