Beaugrand back on top with Sunderland win Cassandre Beaugrand made it back-to-back wins for the first time in her career and fired up the world title chase with gold at the inaugural WTCS Sunderland in late July. Leading out of the water and then working well as part of a seven-deep group for much of the bike, she was one of 28 athletes pouring into transition together after the packs merged, then clicked into her familiar stride and a pace that only Emma Lombardi could match. The former U23 world champion wasn't able to hang on for long, however, Beaugrand attacking up the final hill and soaring home to take the tape and the gold by more than 20 seconds. Lombardi earned her second silver of 2023, Germany's Annika Koch with bronze ahead of Leonie Periault and Marlene Gomez-Goggel. "Emma was pushing me until the end so I had to dig deep.
