Fifty men competed for the titles at a challenging Standard-distance triathlon in Valencia at the start of September, and it was Hungary's Mark Devay leading the non-wetsuit swim, creating a useful gap with only Connor Bentley (GBR) and Kevin Tarek Vinuelas (ESP) keeping close to his pace. The trio maintained a 12-second lead into the bike transition. Tarek was first to drop back with bike issues, and by the third lap, Bentley and Devay had merged with the chasers, then the second group caught on, powered by Spanish duo Antonio Serrat and David Cantero. A huge group entered T2 together the home pair out fastest along with the likes of Lasse Nygaard- Priester, Cameron Main, Nicola Azzano and Michele Sarzilla in pursuit. Into the final kilometer, 20-year-old Cantero was able to out-sprint Nygaard-Priester to secure his first World Cup victory by the finest of margins, Sarzilla with bronze. 2 Sep 2023 Elite Men 72 contents
