Exactly 2,569 days since her Rio 2016 Olympic triumph, Gwen Jorgensen secured the return victory of her dreams at the World Triathlon Cup Valencia. The race got underway following a huge storm, and as the skies cleared it was Belgium's Jolien Vermeylen who led the swim, establishing a significant lead with Switzerland's Anja Weber. Jorgensen stayed close, though, trailing by only seven seconds by the exit while favourites Lisa Terstch and Claire Michel struggled and fell behind. The 22-woman lead bike group pulled clear of the rest of the field, Valerie Barthelemy (BEL), Yuko Takahashi (JPN), Nina Eim (GER) and Noelia Juan (ESP) going well, great runners like Tilda Mansson (SWE), Jorgensen and Vermeylen staying safe and trying to save some legs for the run. It was halfway into that final 5km on foot that Jorgensen made her decisive move and left her rivals in her wake all the way to the tape and a milestone comeback win, the German duo of Nina Eim and Marlene Gomez-Goggel with the silver and bronze. 2 Sep 2023 Elite Women 74 contents
