After leading solo the individual race for over one hour and a half only to miss out on the medals at the end, Vittoria Lopes was on a Mixed Relay mission on the final day of Pan American Games action, and duly brought home the gold she craved. Eleven teams lined up on another cold, wet and windy morning in Vina del Mar, where local hero Diego Moya charged out of the ice-cold Pacific Ocean onto El Sol beach in first place, followed closely by Seth Rider (USA) and Brock Hoel (CAN). Moya was soon left behind by those two, though, and Erica Ackerlund (USA) and Emy Legault (CAN) then showed fantastic form on the swim and increased their advantage over Djenyfer Arnold (BRA), Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela and Ecuador in a large group behind her. Ackerlund worked hard to gain a useful lead for Matt McElroy, Manoel Messias chasing hard for Brazil along with with Aram Penaflor for Mexico. Gina Sereno had the responsibility of Team USA anchor leg but was quickly caught by Lopes in the water and never looked back, going on to take the tape and the embrace of her team, Sereno holding off Jamnicky to secure USA silver ahead of rivals Canada. 4 Nov 2023 Panamerican Games - Mixed Relay 206 contents
