24 Sep 2023 U23 Women World Championship Germany's Selina Klamt was crowned the 2023 Women's U23 World Champion in Pontevedra after a thrilling final lap showdown against Maria Tome of Portugal. After the first 750m swim lap there was little to separate the first 15 athletes, Klamt, Brea Roderick (NZL) and Jessica Fullagar (GBR) among the quickest, joined by Laura Holanszky, Sophia Howell and Tilly Anema on lap two. Fullagar made a break on the bike but even after a crash broke up the chase effort, the solo ride took its toll and the Brit was caught and 26 athletes rode together all the way into T2. Klamt and Tomé were locked together for much of the 10km run with Angelica Prestia (ITA) and Cathia Schar (SUI) before pulling clear late on. Tome camped on Klamt's shoulder for the last 2.5km but could never find the reserves to pass, Klamt taking the tape and a brilliant win, Prestia with the bronze. 40 contents
