In the heat of Brasilia, Italy's Alice Betto secured her first World Cup win, making a decisive move up the final hill to run solo for the closing stages to the tape. It had been home favourite Vittoria Lopes setting the early pace in the 1.5km swim despite drifting off line, Katie Zaferes trying to stick close to her feet and also straying, Valerie Barthelemy and Zuzana Michalikova trying to stay in contact. They were all in a 10-deep group along with Mexico's Rosa Tapia and Petra Kuriokova, before the likes of Miriam Casillas and Erica Hawley drew alongside. Out onto the 3-lap run, Tapia was soon going off the front, Betto and Zaferes among seven runners chasing and with some daylight behind them, but by lap two the Mexican talent was dropped, Kurikova moving up into third and Betto and Zaferes pulling away. Zaferes looked comfortable out front but it was the Italian who had the final say, attacking off the bridge and searing away to the gold, Zaferes settling for silver as Tapia held off Kurikova for bronze. 15 Oct 2023 Elite Women 94 contents
